Here at America’s first pet insurer, we love and appreciate a festive theme name. With the 4th right around the corner, the Wacky Pet Names editorial team set out in search of some patriotic favorites—and our members set a high bar indeed!
Uniquely American (and wacky!) pet names
First, a shout out to our patriotic, one-of-a-kind Wacky Pet Names nominees.
Few aspects of American cuisine are more iconic than our country’s unique take on cheese—made bright yellow and individually wrapped for convenience! American Cheese is also the name of a pup who was coaxed away from a dangerous highway (and into a new home) with a tasty slice, and whose name took home this year’s Wacky Pet Names canine top honors.
Many other Wacky Pet Names nominees took a cue from American ingenuity and drew inspiration from some of the products, businesses and characters that help define our national identity. Some favorites include:
Kirkland Signature Brand, named for the beloved purveyor of bulk goods and cheap hot dogs.
Wendy’s 4 for $4, named for another thrifty deal from one of America’s drive-thru favorites (and another pet who took home this year's Wacky Pet Names honors in the feline category).
Grimace from McDonalds, named for the big purple mascot in McDonaldland—which we assume is somewhere in America.
Frosted Mini Wheats, named for a distinctly American part of a balanced breakfast.
Patriotic pet name favorites
If you’re looking for a pet name that’s a little less wacky but still ready to celebrate the 4th, we’ve got something for you too. Here are some paw-pular pet names that are as American as apple pie (which, surprisingly, no one has named their pet!).
Red, White or Blue - Betsy Ross would be delighted by the number of Nationwide-insured pets with names her beloved banner inspires. In total, 2,448 dogs, 389 cats, 17 reptiles, 42 birds and 26 other exotic pets are named after one of these three patriotic hues.
Liberty – My country ‘tis of thee, sweet land of … a whopping 304 Nationwide-insured pets named Liberty, including 275 dogs, 24 cats, three rabbits, a goat and a cockatoo.
Justice – Then there’s that natural counterpart to Liberty, represented by 120 Nationwide-insured pets named Justice, including 107 dogs, 12 cats and an African grey parrot.
Freedom – Let freedom ring—and bark and purr! In total, 37 Nationwide-insured pets are named Freedom, including 35 dogs and two cats.
Glory – Mine eyes have seen the glory of, well, 37 Nationwide-insured pets named Glory, including 32 dogs and five cats.
Patriot – In total, 27 Nationwide-insured pets are named Patriot, including 26 dogs and one cat. One or more of these pets may be named for the movie or the football team, but we’ll count it either way.
America – Some pet parents take subtle inspiration from our nation’s history, whereas others just shout it out. In total, 21 Nationwide-insured dogs and two cats are named America, including variants of “Captain America” and one ‘Merica.
Anthem – Sing it loud and sing it proud—these seven Nationwide-insured dogs named Anthem may just howl along.
Independence – What better name than Independence to celebrate our national birthday on July 4th? At least five Nationwide-insured pets agree, including three dogs, a cat and a rabbit.
Uncle Sam – Last but certainly not least, we have two Nationwide-insured pets who are named for America’s leading man in his red, white and blue suit, including a border collie and one chicken.
Star-spangled pet protection
